Wing Chun is one of the more practical and technical techniques in Southern Quan, and its strength lies in the immersion in combat. It is fast and defensively tight, with flexible horse steps and fast up and down, both offensive and defensive and offensive at the same time, rigid and soft, and less energy consumption.
Wing Chun has created three boxing sets such as small thoughts, bridge finding and finger marking and wooden pile methods based on its theories, mental methods and techniques, and is combined with sticky hand exercises to train feelings and reactions. Wing Chun uses a method of power called “inching” to attack and defend. In terms of theory and mental method, it pays attention to the middle line, continuous elimination and fighting, short strokes and long strokes, clever victories, staying and sending, throwing hands straight forward, etc., to attack and defend with the shortest distance and time.
1. The principle of the middle line
The midline principle is a major feature of Wing Chun. Each person will have a central line that goes straight down from the front Baihui point to the human center, throat, heart fossa, dantian, and to the ground, which Jane calls the “middle line”. Most of the critical parts of the human body are concentrated on the “midline”, so effectively hitting the opponent’s “midline key” is also a shortcut to knocking out or defeating the opponent.
Of course, because attacking the opponent’s “center line” can easily knock out or injure the enemy, then, while attacking the enemy’s center line key, you should pay more attention to guarding your own “center line key”, which is also the “defense and use of the middle” in Wing Chun, and it is also the most basic guiding theory of Wing Chun.

Action analysis: The opponent’s punch route is from his shoulder front to my neck with a diagonal line, while my straight punch is issued from the midline of the human body, the fist route is shorter than the opponent’s, and in the case of simultaneous punches, it hits the target significantly earlier than the opponent, while blocking the opponent’s hand from the target. Whether cutting out from the inner door or the outer door, it puts the opponent’s offensive and defensive actions on the periphery, and holds the center line from beginning to end in the process.
2. Even eliminate and beat
Continuous elimination is to counterattack while resisting and defusing the opponent’s attack methods, also known as the same period of attack and defense. Generally, the action play method of boxing is to first “attack” and then “one defense”, or first “one defense” and then “one attack”, that is, a complete action is divided into two steps or two beats to do, so the action will naturally be half slower.
The style of fighting is “counterattack while defending”, which means that actions that can only be completed in two beats in other martial arts can be completed in one beat, which is used to save half the time. Fighting tends to be won or lost in seconds, so even if you are a little faster, you will have a head start. It can also be said that Wing Chun or Jeet Kune Do have both offensive and defensive meanings as soon as they are shot, that is, they do not have a simple defense, nor a single attack, but “attack in the middle: square. Defensive Attack”.
In this way, it is defense and can hit the opponent at the same time, and the attack dodges the opponent’s attack at the same time, in short, it is offensive in attack, defense in attack, attack can not be separated from defense, defense is not separated from attack, emphasizing “offensive and defensive integration” and “elimination and combat integration”.
Basic moves: When the two sides face each other, the opponent’s left fist directly attacks my head, and I block the opponent’s straight fist with my right hand, while the left hand punches and directly attacks the opponent’s key. If I can’t make a move: the opponent switches to a right fist to directly attack the opponent’s head, and I use the same pipe to block the left and right punch and hit the opponent directly in the neck or head. If the opponent attacks with a left hook, I 18 hit the opponent in the chest with a right clasp and a left push palm to knock the opponent back.
Action analysis: Continuous elimination of the fight emphasizes efficiency, pays attention to results, is often applied in actual combat, proficiency in this technique, conducive to the improvement of kung fu. The main point of this technique is to attack and defend at the same time, with the left hand defending the right hand or the right hand defending the left hand attack, both hands at the same time.
3. Short beats are long, fast is slow
Wing Chun is based on simple, direct, powerful and fast straight-line attacks. Short stroke length is to use a shorter stroke distance to correspond to a relatively long shot distance, so as to achieve the effect of controlling slow with fast. Since the straight attack takes the shortest route, it saves a lot of movement time and distance compared to those arc-shaped moves, in which case even if the opponent launches the attack first, our side can still hit the opponent quickly and accurately, even if the opponent launches the attack first.
If you combine the “attack and defense to grab the middle line” in the previous section with the straightforward time-saving and labor-saving “straight line attack” here, you can get the idea that the reason why Wing Chun’s attack is unstoppable is that it directly attacks the opponent’s “midline key” or the closest target from one’s own side from the shortest path, which greatly increases the time and difficulty for the opponent to react to such actions. The threat of such actions is like holding a sharp sword to pierce the throat or heart of the enemy. The threat is frightening. It is precisely because Wing Chun’s attack movements run through the principles of saving time, effort, shortness and suddenness, so it is characterized by short strokes and long strokes and fast to control slowness.
Basic moves: When the two sides face each other, the opponent attacks my right rib with my right leg, I raise my right leg to the knee, intercept it at the opponent’s calf and block its attack line, and kick sideways to the knee of the opponent’s right leg. The opponent swings his left hand to punch me in the head, I even knock out, my right hand blocks and my left hand punches at the same time, attacking the opponent’s key, and the right palm takes advantage of the momentum to slash at the opponent’s neck, and at the same time leans forward to knock the opponent to the ground.
Action analysis: When the opponent attacks me with his right leg, the trajectory of the opponent’s leg is arc-shaped, and the route that I run when my right leg raises my knee is very short, saving time and running distance, and because the route of leg walking is straight when kicking horizontally, the time taken is short, and it is difficult for the opponent to protect or attack in a short time after being intercepted by me. Wing Chun is the simplest and most direct way to hit the opponent by making full use of the principles of linear mechanics.
4. Take advantage of the trend and win with ingenuity
Taking advantage of the trend is to avoid the opponent’s edge when the two sides are confronted, do not engage in a head-on confrontation with the other party, but use the opponent’s strength to lead the opponent’s strength to both sides of their body to resolve, or according to the opponent’s forward pounce, backward, left, right, etc., slightly guide and resolve the enemy’s center of gravity, and do not use brute force to compete with the other party, in order to achieve the effect of “winning with skill” and “four or two pounds”. In Wing Chun, a combination of continuous elimination and takeaway is combined with taking advantage of the trend, and taking advantage of the trend at the same time as the elimination of the band, giving the opponent a surprise and heavy blow.
Basic movement: When the two sides face each other, the opponent hits me on the right side with a left fist, my right palm meets the fist and blocks upwards, hitting the opponent’s wrist directly, and at the same time the left hand changes from palm to fist through the opponent’s left outer door to hit the opponent’s head. At this time, the opponent’s left fist is drawn outward in an attempt to defuse the threat of my left fist, and I retract my left hand in a block posture in front of my chest, while my right hand changes from palm to fist through the inner door of the opponent’s left fist and locks the opponent’s throat deeply. If the opponent swings his right hand to punch my left side, at this time, he can retract the hand that locks the throat, and hit the opponent’s neck with his left hand, and at the same time step forward with his left foot, take advantage of the momentum to clasp the neck and stretch his legs, and flip the opponent to the ground.
Action analysis: Taking advantage of the trend and winning with skill are applied in many boxing techniques, but in Wing Chun, it combines the principle of continuous elimination and defense of the center line to achieve the use of the momentum to fight, the strength to fight, the small to win the big, and the weak to win the strong.
5. Wing Chun anti-grappling
Grappling is generally achieved through close contact, by means of counter-joints, locking weak parts or grasping acupuncture points, etc., in order to achieve the purpose of controlling the opponent without harming or severely damaging the captured object (that is, achieving the role of “binding” the opponent without the help of any other tools). And many methods of boxing grappling are not to let the grappler get close or avoid entanglement with his bridgebearer, and use methods such as blowing.
Once captured by the opponent, there are not many effective ways to crack it. Even ordinary martial arts practitioners, it is more difficult not to be captured, and it is even more difficult to crack without being captured by the opponent.
Wing Chun’s anti-grappling is famous for two reasons: First, Wing Chun is good at close pressing, delicate sticky techniques, bridge hands and waist horses are very flexible, and its ability to control opponents is stronger than ordinary grappling techniques; Second, through the practice of Wing Chun, the practitioner can become the nemesis of grappling with wrists, elbows, body and horse steps, thick internal strength, short feet and sensitive perceptual responses, etc., so that ordinary grapplers are difficult to perform their skills, so they can become the nemesis of grappling. This is also the reason why special forces and security agencies protecting dignitaries in various countries especially favor Wing Chun.
Anti-grappling practice:
Example 1: One-handed elbow is grappled with a counter-grappling
Basic movement: When the two sides confront, the other party’s right hand quickly grabs my right wrist, and the left hand is against my right elbow at the same time, forming a grappling posture. While the opponent’s left hand was not fully exerted, I quickly stepped up with my right foot, reached behind the opponent’s left leg, and at the same time grabbed the opponent’s left wrist with my left hand and straightened it, squatted slightly, leaned on the other person’s shoulders, and squeezed out behind the other party with my right hand, causing the other party to lose his center of gravity and fall to the ground.
Example 2: Hands are held behind the back
Basic movements: When the two sides confront, the other party grabs and presses my right wrist with his left hand, grabs my left wrist with his right hand and twists it into a scissor shape, I quickly push up with both hands and backpalm, so that the palm faces me, the right foot steps up to the back of the opponent’s right leg, and at the same time grabs the opponent’s wrist with both hands, twists it in the trend, forms a counter-grappling, and pushes it down.
Action analysis: The other party is close and wants to catch me with a counter-joint, while I take advantage of the trend and use the flexible characteristics of the technique to quickly grab the opponent’s left hand, and knock the opponent down with ingenuity.
